KINGSPORT — A Kingsport prosthetist was arrested and charged with felony reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct at a DUI checkpoint late Saturday night.
According to an incident report filed by the Kingsport Police Department, Christopher Wayne Alexander, 47, of Alexander Prosthetics and Orthotics on Stone Drive, was arrested at 11:40 p.m. He was stopped at a DUI checkpoint on East Stone Drive near Crown Colony and was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
The police report states that Alexander told police he had just left his business, located about a block down the road from the checkpoint, and had forgotten to buckle his seat belt. The reporting officer states that as Alexander handed him his driver’s license, a handgun carry permit was observed.
Alexander, of 261 Lakeview Circle, Kingsport, told police that a firearm was in his right front pocket. The incident report states that when Alexander was asked to pull over to the side of the road, he began to “curse loudly” at police.
According to the incident report, Alexander pulled his 1992 Mercedes-Benz off the road “in a very erratic manner.” In doing so, police said he nearly struck another officer with his vehicle, as the officer had to take “evasive action” to avoid being hit.
Police said Alexander exited his vehicle in an aggressive manner. He then began walking toward the officer who initially asked him to pull over. Knowing Alexander had a firearm in his pocket, the officer commanded him to stop and show his hands.
According to police, Alexander did not comply with the orders, and at one point appeared to reach for his pants pocket.
Police said that after several commands Alexander finally complied with arrest procedures. He was charged with felony reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and a seat belt violation.
Along with the gun in his pocket, a second pistol and 25 rounds of ammunition were recovered from Alexander’s car.
